The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated on October 17, First observed on October 17, 1987 – that day, hundreds of thousands of people gathered at the Trocadero, Paris, to honor the victims of extreme Poverty, hunger, and violence. In 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948.
- On that day, they officially declared Poverty as a violation of human rights, and there is a need to come together and ensure that these rights are respected.
- A commemorative stone inscribed that Poverty violates unveiled human rights on this day.
- So every year on October 17, people from all backgrounds, beliefs, and social origins gather to show their commitment and support to the poor to help eradicate Poverty.
- On December 22, 1992, the UN General Assembly officially declared October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
- There is a quote from Joseph Wresinski, founder of ATD Fourth World. He led over a hundred thousand people at the Human Rights Plaza in 1987 – “whenever men and women are bound to live in extreme poverty, there is a human rights violation. Our main duty is to come together to ensure these rights are respected.”
- Eradicating Poverty is not helping the poor but giving every man and woman live in dignity and feeling pride.
- October 17 represents every poor person’s effort and struggle to live in Poverty and gives a chance to hear all their concerns and help the poor fight against Poverty.
- The main motive of the day is the participation of the poor who live in Poverty, to hear their concerns and make their expertise to end Poverty.
- The people who are living in Poverty get a chance to speak about their lives and their struggles to end Poverty and how they are united and willing to end Poverty to live a dignified and respected life.
- Governments and NGOs run campaigns each year to help the poor come out of Poverty and needy, to make them self-sustain so that if they have the will to get out of Poverty & poverty, they can come out and be confident to lead a dignified life.
- If the people are struggling to live in Poverty, they come and express their life and take opinions and help to eradicate the poverty virus from the community or society.
- The people should come out and be confident and work hard to end the Poverty they are facing; they should come forward to fight to end Poverty.
- Schools, public squares, town halls, and cultural centers organize events like debates, art exhibitions, workshops, and musical performances to make people aware of the day and express the way to overcome and end Poverty in society.
- Poverty is like a virus, which makes you hollow from the inside, so all who are in Poverty should come forward to end the virus.
- Poverty is a violation of human rights. Each person has the right to live a better life.
- The theme for 2022-2023 of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is Dignity for all in practice.
- Today most people live in extreme poverty and experience their dignity being denied and are disrespected by society. So they can be treated with respect and dignity in society.
